About us

Who we are

Pouteria volunteers walking the Te Matuku Bay reserve track

We are a conservation charity — the Pouteria Charitable Trust — established in 2021 to support, preserve, protect and enhance the inner Hauraki Gulf Islands' environment for future generations.

Our work is primarily focused around the nationally ecologically significant Te Matuku Bay on Waiheke Island.

All contributions of time and effort are from volunteers. We fundraise to employ contractors — principally to break the back of the hardest work so that volunteers can undertake follow-on work.

Every decision we make starts with the question:

"What is in the best interest of the land?"

This is the heuristic we return to again and again. The answer guides our decisions, strategy and work. It cuts through noise and keeps us honest across seasons, contractors and funders.

Our mantras

Charity begins at home.

Have your pest plants and animals under control at home before volunteering with us.

Do it once and do it right!

Work out what works. Plan. Don't waste precious resources.

Get on with it!

More doing, less talking! Focus volunteer time and effort on action and outcomes.

More transparency and accountability — for everyone!

Be open and transparent and be accountable. Demand the same of everyone.

If you resonate with the way we think and work, and you have both an interest in conservation and free time to volunteer — please make contact. Join us!
