2026 / 2027 Season Begins!

The 2026 / 2027 season has started! Contractors (Wildwood - Rose and Reuben) and volunteers M and T started work in TMBSR today. We work as a team of 4 early in the season so as to maximise control, during spring, of pest plants that would be a problem later in the season. Resource allocation and timing is key!

Today we worked in Ngai Tai and Polygons A and B.

It was warm and the bush is already very dry underfoot.

We were mainly controlling asparagus and gorse but moth, pampas, ginger, mexican devil and tobacco were also controlled en route. All the ginger was grubbed out and brought out and put into a rubbish bin;

Of note:

- bait line A on pink lower loop needs a jolly good cut back and remarking;

- single asparagus seedlings were most prolific in the area immediately adjacent to CW's boundary, because its blanket asparagus the other side of the boundary;

- moth seed banks seem to have calmed down but rain might start a whole new batch of seeds off (needs watching);

Track logs as below, Rose's tracking system didn't work on one run. One moth plant hot spot waypointed and marked with double pink flagging tape around the edge.

The Plan, for November 2026

Each colour represents a day. 8 days in November, 2 per week. Starting at the southern end of TMBSR working north, hitting off the major hotspots, polygons and areas M has identified as priorities from her audits. At the end of the month we can look back and see how we did. On blue and green days we will probably get most of willow valley  covered off too.

Today M filled water stations at the north end of TMBSR while T manned the pump and refilled the tanker unit.

All done! Until next time!

Infrastructure and manual control

Today T manned the pump and M wandered around the southern end of TMBSR filling water stations (4), in advance of contractors and volunteers working together through November to hit spring growth early and hard. While T was off refilling the tanker M was searching out and controlling moth vines which escaped control last season and had grown into pretty decent sized vines in tree tops over winter.  Two spotted and controlled in Polygon A / Ngai Tai. Neither were yet flowering.  See images below. No track log for M.

Today M and Reuben accompanied members of the Waiheke Local Board and some of their advisors on a tour around Te Matuku environs, including a walk through Te Matuku Bay Scenic Reserve, including a visit to the shell bank. Points of interest covered per Guide prompt sheet at bottom of this post.

We were blessed with a blue sky sunny day and the bush paths were mainly dry underfoot.

Tea and scones marked the end of the tour.

Hopefully, the Local Board now have a better understanding of beauty and ecological value of the Te Matuku environs and the local issues.

New hose lines, October 2026

Today M and T rolled out two  (of three needed) new hose lines in advance of the start of the new season of work. Locations as requested by Wildwood because they are difficult to get to areas needing a fair amount of asparagus control work. Track logs as below.

ABBREVIATIONS:

ASPA - asparagus above (needing control)

ASPB - asparagus below (needing control)

C750WCASPB - location of bait station 750 on C Line, water course, asparagus below (needing control)

D650  - BAIT STATION 650 ON D Line

HL - hose line

HLATFENCE / NEWHOSEATFENCE -  hose line at fence line

LARGE MOTH - large moth controlled (in known hot spot)

NEW WATER STN  - new water station site

PIPE - random concrete pipes (rolled down bank from road)  spotted in bush below road, now obvious since the blanket asparagus has died off (see photo below)

M found another of the holes D spotted on recent bait round. Possible kiwi beak hole. See image below. Hole was as deep as short stick below hole in photo, 5-6 inches. Glove in photo for scale.

Baiting results summary following Pulse 2 for Season 2026, September 2026

Rat baiting, in TMBSR, took place again during September 2026 (second bait round for this season). Two new volunteers (S and V) participated in baiting on their induction to "adopting" Pink Upper Loop. We are still looking for a partner for D, for Purple Loop, this time T and D baited Purple Loop together.

The heat map above is a pictorial of the results of the baiting in May / June 2026 as recorded during the September bait round. Red denotes baits all gone and orange half gone. Bait take was 99%! But, this is a slight improvement on the bait round at the same time last year as in that bait round 100% of baits had been taken! See summary tables below.

SUMMARY / BAIT TAKE
BAIT ROUND DATES: PERCENTAGE TAKE:
  Red Orange Green
August / Sept 2024
October 2024 40% 13% 47%
December 2024 / January 2025 72% 8% 20%
July 2025 85% 3% 13%
September / October 2025 100% 0% 0%
December 2025 / January 2026 93% 1% 6%
May / June 2026 88% 2% 10%
September 2026 99% 1% 0%

PERCENTAGE BAIT ALL GONE BY SEASON & PULSE
  Pulse
Season 1 2 3
24/25   40 72
25/26 85 100 93
26/27 88 99

Pouteria records all volunteer and contractor time (both field and admin). Field time for this bait round was 28 hours, one hour less than last time. Admin time was 15 and a half hours but that covers bagging baits, baiting related admin (ie relevant blog posts) and the field time of two new volunteers participating in their induction - because to include those hours in the general field hours would distort the field hour statistics so as to make them meaningless for comparison purposes.
